Why wait for wrinkles to appear before treating them? We believe prevention is better than cure and this statement cannot be more true than when it comes to your skin.
It’s easy to take our skin for granted when we are young and wrinkle free, but what we do from an early age sets the foundation for a smoother, younger, healthier looking skin in the future.
What Are The Benefits of Retinol and How Is It Beneficial For My Skin?
Retinol, Retinoids, Retin-A – what is all the fuss about?
Retinol is largely touted as the be-all-end-all of anti-aging skincare, and it deserves its reputation. Retinol is one of the only skincare products with real science behind it.
Retinoids were originally released as a treatment for persistent acne. Since the inception of retinol based skincare, these products have been used to treat psoriasis, sun damage, and even warts before they found their niche in the anti-aging market and the results were truly remarkable!
Retinol will become a staple in your beauty closet after reading this! Retinol is a vitamin A complex that your skin essentially digests and works by dramatically speeding up cell turnover.
What does that mean?
Retinol works by helping to remove old cells while encouraging the growth of fresh, new, healthy cells to take their place. It’s capable of penetrating the deepest layers of skin, rooting itself in the layers where wrinkles are just beginning to form. This proactive treatment can slow their development while preventing collagen from breaking down.
The end result is a smoother, clearer and more radiant complexion with less lines, improved texture and smaller pores.
How Do I Use Retinol Properly On My Skin?
Because retinols are super-powered you may need to make some adjustments to your routine. Just like starting a new workout, your skin might need some time to adjust to the potency of retinol. If you are new to using retinol and especially if you have sensitive skin, we recommend starting slowly, once every other night or even twice per week if you have sensitive skin. Also, if you are using other high potency products, like Vitamin C, it is a good idea to alternate application on opposite days. While the retinol starts to work it may increase the sensitivity of your skin during the adjustment period. It can be normal for some mild redness or sensitivity to occur in the beginning. If at any point you experience more than what you consider mild redness, irritation, or discomfort that does not resolve itself or continues to worsen with time, immediately stop using retinol and contact your dermatologist.
How much retinol should I use?
You’ll only need a pea sized amount of retinol for every treatment. Any more than that, and you may irritate your skin.
How should I apply retinol to my skin?
You should apply retinol products to skin that’s already been washed with a gentle cleanser and dried. Using retinoids in conjunction with other skin penetrating products, such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, can cause an adverse reaction.
Retinoids replace those products anyway, so using them together would be double dosing.
Retinol works best when used in conjunction with mild AHA exfoliants. These are products that you would leave on overnight and allow to gradually work their magic. In many cases, these serve as a valuable replacement for a toner. Apply our Evening Retinol Renewal Serum or our Total Nutrition Night Repair Complex at night and wake up to a glowing complexion!
Are There Any Precautions I Should Know About?
Retinoids can also make the skin more sensitive to sun exposure. If you’re going to be outside during peak sun hours, make sure you’re well protected. It’s always a good idea to apply an SPF 30 sunscreen regardless of whether or not you have sensitive skin, because the sun is the enemy when it comes to healthy skin. Also, you should not use any product containing retinol if you are pregnant, nursing, or plan to become pregnant.
