Your Decade by Decade Guide to Caring for Your Skin and Preventing Skin Aging
Prevention is certainly better than cure, and it could not be truer when it comes to your skin.
Too often we take our skin for granted when it is still plump and wrinkle free, but then try desperately to treat it in later years when skin damage becomes evident in the form of lines, wrinkles, discoloration, etc. The best time to treat your skin is when it looks as if it doesn’t need any treating at all.
To help you get started, we put together tips for taking the best care of your skin and keeping your skin healthy in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond. Here is Your Decade by Decade Guide to Caring for Your Skin and Preventing Skin Aging:
When should I start using anti-aging products?
There are so many different lotions and potions for every skin condition possible, that it can all get a bit confusing!
For the very best long-term results, add targeted actives to your regimen according to our age-specific timeline. It is never too late to start taking care of your skin, and, no matter what your age, make sure you are drinking enough water and using SPF.
Let’s break it down:
In your 20s
The most important thing you can do in your twenties is to use an SPF of 30 or higher every single day (yes even on cloudy days!) The harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun are so destructive to your skin, and the sneaky thing about this kind of skin damage is that it takes years for the damage to appear. Fast forward five, ten, twenty years and those days spent on the beach working on your tan or tanning sessions and no SPF will no longer be worth it.
The second most important thing you can do in your twenties is to avoid smoking (second hand smoke counts too). Nothing causes premature aging faster than free radicals in cigarette smoke. Again, this can be easy to forget when you are young, as the skin damage takes a few years to appear.
What products should I use?
You don’t need to go too crazy with anti-aging products in your twenties, especially if you have oily skin. Most anti-aging products contain added moisture, so remember that oily skin benefits much more from a light weight lotion. Don’t skip the moisturizer altogether, though, as this may cause your oil glands to produce more sebum to compensate for the lack of moisture, which will only make your oily skin or acne worse.
For a daily moisturizer we recommend our Complete Daily Moisture lotion, which is non-greasy and loaded with antioxidants such as Vitamin E and resveratrol, which will fight free radicals and brighten your skin. Be sure to follow up with an SPF of 30 or higher over this moisturizer if you are heading outdoors.
Your twenties is the perfect time to introduce a good retinol product into your routine.
Here’s what retinol can do for your skin!
- Shrink pores
- Reduce acne
- Even out skin tone
- Soften skin
- Brighten skin
- Increase cell turnover, which builds collagen, helping to prevent future damage
Try our Total Nutrition Night Repair Complex (lotion based) before bed so that it can work its magic while you get your beauty sleep. Vitamin A speeds up cell turnover, while hyaluronic acid improves elasticity and provides your skin with intense hydration. Antioxidants, including green tea, pomegranate seed oil and Co Enzyme Q10 fight free radicals, preventing lines and wrinkles. If you prefer a gel-based serum instead of a cream, choose our Retinol Evening Renewal Serum instead.
Breakouts or wanting to get a jump start on taking the best care of your skin? Why not treat yourself (or a friend) to our Pore Refining Collection or our Clear Skin Collection, which will make your skincare regimen a breeze, while keeping your skin clear and protected against future damage
In your 30s
Your 30s are the time when fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. This is also the perfect time to amp up your skincare routine. Instead of your basic cleanse, tone and moisturizing routine, you should start to experiment with eye creams and anti-aging serums. Don’t panic when you wake up one morning and see that first wrinkle, sit back and take a look at some great products we recommend for you. High quality topical nutrition does make a big difference in the long run!
Everyone is different, and just because you are in your thirties, it doesn’t necessarily mean your skin is suddenly super dry. In fact, with hormone fluctuations, there are many of us dealing with breakouts. If you are still battling with oily skin or breakouts, then stick to our Complete Daily Moisture Lotion, but try adding a serum underneath for that little bit extra. Our Vitamin C Daytime Repair Serum is perfect for antioxidant and anti-aging defense as well as for brightening the skin, keeping it clear, and fading hyperpigmentation (dark spots), and promoting collagen production to keep your skin soft, smooth and prevent wrinkles from forming. Our skin starts to lose collagen more rapidly in our 30’s, topical Vitamin C encourages your skin to renew collagen stores.
If, however, you find yourself on the other end of the spectrum and find that your skin is suddenly very dry, we recommend our Revitalizing Intensive Daily Moisture, which will provide your skin with that extra moisture it craves as well as anti-aging actives and of course antioxidants that protect your skin against the signs of aging.
You don’t have to get into a rut here and use the same products every night. We recommend using our Total Nutrition Night Repair Complex at least a few times a week to increase cell turnover and promote collagen, which is essential for plump, healthy looking skin. On the other nights, try some of our serums or an oil, either alone or under the Total Nutrition Night Repair Complex. Even if your have oily skin, and especially if your skin runs on the dry side, hydration is essential.
Our Organic Jojoba Oil is good for all skin types from oily to dry and will provide your skin with a powerhouse of antioxidants, including Pomegranate Seed Oil and Vitamin E. Jojoba Oil is naturally almost identical to our own skin oils, so hydrates while balancing moisture and keeping skin oils in check throughout the day.
Our Hyaluronic Acid Ultimate Hydration Serum is excellent for providing intense hydration, while improving elasticity in the skin, which results in smoother, younger looking skin. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) infuses the skin with hydration because it has a tremendous capability to hold water – this gives your skin a smooth, plump look and feel. Baby skin is beautifully soft and smooth – one of the main reasons is the abundant stores of HA.If we topically replenish our skin with HA, we can protect our skin from losing elasticity and a smooth texture.
Our Retinol Evening Renewal Serum is super effective, but gentle enough for use on most skin types. Retinol is one of the longest-studied, best anti-aging actives. Vitamin A increases skin cell turnover and renews the skin surface. Is your skin lacking that radiance and feeling dull – this product is the perfect pick-me-up!
Now is the time to really step it up a notch with your skin care routine – Why not try our Ultimate Hydration Collection or our Wrinkle Repair Collection, both of which are perfect for providing some extra hydration and anti-aging benefits for your skin.
TIP: If you’ve never used a serum before, it’s easy!To use our Serums, simply place a few drops in the palm of your hand, then use your fingertips to lightly pat the product onto your skin or massage gently until fully absorbed. For most serums, we recommend 1-2 drops per area of the face (forehead, lower eye area and upper cheeks, nose and mouth, lower cheeks and jawline). Don’t forget your neck and chest! Serums can be worn alone or under one of our moisturizers.
In your 40s and beyond
Unless you are an alien, it’s inevitable that some signs of damage will be evident in your 40s, although if you have taken care of your skin up until now, the damage should be minimal. Here are some recommendations to treat damage now and prevent future damage.
We definitely recommend our Revitalizing Intensive Daily Moisture for your daily moisturizer as your skin needs extra hydration at this age. Try adding a serum under it for an extra boost of anti-aging protection. See two of our favorites below!
Night time is all about Serums! We love applying serums right before bed as the highly-effective anti-aging actives they contain work best while you sleep and your body is in repair mode.
Our DMAE serum is absolutely fantastic for combating wrinkles and dullness. It promotes firmer, smoother skin with a beautiful glow. Powerful anti-aging actives, including Hyaluronic Acid, Coenzyme Q10 and Natural Active Peptides improve skin elasticity, firmness, and provide amino acids, essential for building collagen.
Our Collagen Booster Intense Repair Serum is a must at this age as skin naturally loses collagen as we age. Starting in our 30’s and especially in our 40’s, collagen starts to deplete at the rate of about 1% per year. Collagen is what gives our skin structure, keeping it plump, smooth and youthful. If you haven’t started yet, now is definitely the time to focus protecting collagen. This serum is designed using targeted natural actives that build and protect collagen.
Try our Anti-Aging Collection, which includes four of our best serums for treating and preventing the signs of aging, or our Looking Fabulous Over 50 Collection, for a complete anti-aging, repair regimen with serums as well as our highly effective oil cleanser and our night time retinol lotion.
For all ages
No matter your age or skin type, everyone needs a good daily cleanser. When choosing something that you use every day, even twice a day, it’s important to be read ingredient lists and be picky! Choose a cleanser that not only cleans the skin but also provides nutrition and anti-aging actives. Many cleansers use harsh ingredients like lauryl sulfates, stripping the skin of the essential, protective moisture barrier and damaging and aging the skin in the process. We highly recommend our Nutritive Oil Cleanser and Makeup Remover, loaded with antioxidants, anti-aging actives and nutrients that will deep clean while balancing skin oils, providing hydration to dry skin, and nourishing your skin. Your skin will glow, we promise!
