Detoxing Your Beauty Routine: The Why-To and How-To
If you’ve gotten this far past the holidays and are still sticking to your New Year’s resolutions, we commend you (and frankly, we’re envious of your willpower!). Among all the resolutions you may be working on throughout the year, one of the most helpful for your long-term health and beauty, in addition to diet and exercise, is to detoxify your beauty routine from unnecessary and toxic chemicals. And these days, it’s more doable than ever.
No matter your level of use of beauty products, whether you’re a minimalist or a self-professed beauty junkie, we’ve got some pointers for you that will make your product overhaul simpler. But first, let’s talk about why this transition is so important…
Why Clean Up Your Beauty Regimen?
A survey by the Environmental Working Group found that “the average adult uses 9 personal care products each day, with 126 unique chemical ingredients. More than a quarter of all women and one of every 100 men use at least 15 products daily.” That’s a lot of products. But can we blame ourselves? Beauty products are fun! And yet, while we may feel like toxic chemicals in our personal care products only amount to a little here and a little there, in fact, daily use of layers of multiple products can really add up over time when it comes to our body’s direct contact exposure to chemicals.
That is definitely not good news considering that the cosmetic industry is largely unregulated, and thousands of ingredients are liberally used without sufficient health and safety testing. That means each layer of skincare, haircare, and makeup we apply each day may be exposing us to chemicals that are suspected to be:
● hormone disruptors
● allergens and irritants
● endocrine disruptors
● reproductive toxins
● toxic to the environment
So, knowing all the creepy details, why would any of us be resistant to switching our beauty products to cleaner, safer choices? Simple. We don’t want to give up the results and positive effects we’re getting from our favorite products! We’ve all been there. You decide to try out a natural product, which you’re feeling pretty optimistic about because the price tag implies that it must be fabulous, but it just doesn’t do anything for you. It’s another bottle that ends up getting returned, tossed, or added to the beauty product graveyard that is the back of the bathroom cabinet. Why use anything at all if it’s not going to give you noticeable results that you love?
At Kate Ryan Skincare, we totally agree. That’s why we started making skincare. You shouldn’t have to choose between safe products and products that help you achieve your most beautiful complexion. And getting both from your products shouldn’t feel excessively costly.
You’re Ready For Safe, Healthy Beauty. How Do You Detox Your Beauty Routine?
1.) Choose The Strategy That Feels Most Comfortable To You
The idea of doing a complete purge and replacement of your skincare and beauty products in one fell swoop might sound like a fun challenge to you, or it might sound like an overwhelming and impossibly expensive undertaking at the moment. Don’t worry, there is no wrong way to start making improvements to the safety of your regimen. If you feel ready to ditch all your toxic products and start from a clean slate, then, by all means, enjoy the adventure! Or, make it a gradual transition in which you choose one product at a time to finish using and replace with a healthier option. Eventually, you’ll rebuild your beauty regimen piece by piece into a cleaner collection that you can feel confident about.
Either way, it can be intimidating deciding where to start. We can give you some specific skincare advice because we’re pros at that around here (more on that below), but when it comes to your haircare, makeup, and bodycare, we suggest doing some research online about your favorite products and healthy beauty goals and taking advantage of the footwork that many safe product consumers, beauty bloggers, YouTubers, and advocacy sites like the Environmental Working Group have already done to put as much information out there as possible about products currently on the market. Read reviews, find photos of swatches and befores and afters, and invest in what feels like the right choice for your unique needs.
2.) Be Ready To Experiment
All that being said, anytime you try something new, it’s always a bit of an experiment and you will likely have a bit of trial and error no matter how much research you do. Beauty products in particular can work differently from person to person and can be loved or hated depending on each individuals preferences. We suggest always purchasing products from sources that stand behind their products with an accommodating return policy so you can feel comfortable testing out your choices (see the Kate Ryan Skincare product guarantee here).
3.) Start By Replacing Your Less-Than-True-Love Products
There’s no need to start the detox of your regimen by ditching the products you feel like you can’t live without. Try starting with the types of products that feel easier for you to move on from. If you’re in love with your mascara, but wouldn’t mind switching up your body wash and body lotion, that’s a perfectly good place to begin. Leave-on skincare products, lipsticks, and deodorant are also helpful products to begin going non-toxic with sooner rather than later since they are so easily absorbed. Detoxing your beauty regimen is entirely in your control and you can feel proud of any small changes that you choose to make.
4.) Learn To Look At Ingredient Lists With A Savvy Eye
Be sure the back of the package is as impressive as the front. Learn to look for high concentrations of pronounceable active ingredients and for the majority of the ingredient list to be genuinely beneficial actives rather than fillers, fragrance, and preservatives. While the common guideline of avoiding products full of ingredients with weird, hard-to-say names is often reliable, it’s also a great idea to use helpful tools like EWG’s www.skindeep.org to educate yourself about individual chemical names and risk factors.
5.) Adjust Your Expectations Just a Tad
Here’s the deal with the chemical industry. When you are creating synthetic chemicals without regard to safety or environmental concern, you can make them look, feel, and perform in ways that might not occur the same way in nature. Most of us have grown up using chemical ingredients, so we are very used to having a certain expectation of how a beauty product should feel and look, but this is mostly just a habit that we can adjust away from over time so that we can enjoy products free of unsafe chemicals.
Silicones like dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane are a perfect example. These ingredients are very widely used across the beauty product industry to provide a velvety slip and silky feel to a formulation that is nearly impossible to replicate when making nontoxic products. So, knowing that going into your journey toward a safer beauty routine is important. But the good news is that when products are designed by replacing those sorts of ingredients with genuinely beneficial active, in bases that your skin and hair are more receptive to, you get better results over time without absorbing potentially harmful ingredients into your body.
6.) It’s Not An All Or Nothing Deal
Just like your food choices, don’t feel pressured to choose between being 100% perfectly committed to a flawlessly pure beauty routine and giving up entirely. For example, maybe your skincare and makeup collection are all clean choices but you still want to get your hair colored in a salon or stick with your usual manicure. Every step you take toward a cleaner, healthier beauty routine adds up and makes a difference in your body’s exposure to concerning ingredients.
7.) Switching Up Your Skincare
You might be reading about detoxing your beauty regimen on a skincare blog because you are here to learn about cleaner skincare in particular and we don’t blame you! Skincare tends to be the category of beauty products that we layer the most and are most susceptible to absorbing, so it might be considered a top priority when reducing toxins in your personal care routine. So let’s talk skincare, our specialty!
There is a dizzying amount of skincare products on the market, both chemical-based and organic, 100% plant-based versions and everything in between. Across the spectrum at every price point you’ll find some that work and many that simply don’t do enough for your skin. Kate Ryan Skincare products are designed to bridge the gap. We set out to make skincare using high-potency, active ingredients that deliver genuine and noticeable results to the skin, so you don’t have to give up amazing anti-aging and beautiful skin benefits while avoiding ingredients that could be potentially harmful. We believe that this type of product should be widely accessible so we also do everything we can to keep our products reasonably priced, while maintaining gold standard quality and product integrity.

This can be a sound approach to any new skincare regimen regardless of brand, but particularly for products like ours that are focused on power and potency.
