EGF Serum: The New #1

DMAE Firming Repair Serum has been our consistent best-selling product for ten years.

But in 2023, a product we introduced in 2021 emerged as your new favorite: Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) Skin Rejuvenation Serum!

So, why the shift?

Let’s take a look at why people love Kate’s EGF Serum. First, we’ll start with some insights into the science of Epidermal Growth Factor.

What is Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)?

EGF, sometimes called Growth Factor, is a naturally occurring protein in your skin that stimulates cell regeneration. When skin is damaged (cut, sunburn, etc.), new cell regeneration stimulates fibroblasts, which produce collagen, hyaluronan, and elastin to speed up skin healing.

Due the ability to signal the cells to activate and start healing, Epidermal Growth Factor is considered one of the most important ingredients for skin health.

When applied topically, EGF generates new, (younger-looking) skin. Like collagen, you are born with EGF. But also, like collagen, the amount of EGF decreases as you age. Collagen and EGF begin to decrease when we are just 25 years old - and you hit the maximum production at age 20!

There are no known side effects of Epidermal Growth Factor. However, since EGF accelerates the production of new skin cells, those with a history of skin cancer should have EGF Serum (and all skincare products) approved by their healthcare provider before use.

EGF is made through Protein Expression, a process that has been around for over 30 years. This process uses synthetic DNA to teach bacteria how to produce EGF identical to human EGF.

What are the skincare benefits of EGF?

Epidermal Growth Factor is known in skincare as the “Fountain of Youth.” It can be combined with many other skincare ingredients, including DMAE, Vitamin C, hydrolyzed collagen, hyaluronic acid, and retinol.

Before it became a standalone product, EGF has been an active ingredient in many of our formulas since we started 12 years ago.  The scientific name for EGF you'll find in our ingredient lists is sh-Oligopeptide-1.

Here are the top 10 benefits of using EGF in your skincare routine:

  1. Can be used on sensitive skin (unlike some anti-aging actives like retinol)
  2. Speeds up your body’s ability to heal (Please note: EGF is not for use on open wounds or when there is a sign of infection.)
  3. Boosts cell turnover to combat signs of aging and keeps skin feeling good and looking healthy
  4. Soothes and supports natural healing after procedures such as laser treatments, chemical peels, microneedling, and microdermabrasion
  5. Stimulates collagen and elastin to smooth wrinkles and improve the skin’s texture and elasticity
  6. Strengthens the skin’s barrier to hold moisture and maintain optimal skin hydration
  7. Accelerates the fading of acne scars and inflammation
  8. Fades age spots and other skin pigmentation concerns
  9. Restores elasticity, plumpness, and brightness
  10. Rejuvenates skin that is struggling due to hormonal changes (often caused by menopause)

Since Epidermal Growth Factor works well with other skincare products and ingredients, it’s easy to add to any skincare regimen.

How do you use an EGF Serum?

If your skin shows visible signs of aging - or you want to prevent or repair loss of firmness, lines, or wrinkles - Kate’s EGF Serum is for you!

Kate's EGF Serum can be used daily for maximum anti-aging results (healthier, tighter, plumper, younger-looking skin). After cleansing, EGF Serum should be applied to dry skin. It is best to allow the EGF Serum to absorb in the skin before applying other serums or moisturizers.

If you are using EGF Serum along with one of Kate’s Vitamin C Serums, we recommend waiting at least 15 minutes between this or any other acidic serum - or use one in the morning and the other in the evening. When used correctly, these products are a perfect duo.

Similarly, when you use Kate’s EGF Serum alongside Kate’s Collagen Booster Intense Repair Serum, the benefits of EGF are even more pronounced. These two anti-aging powerhouse formulas increase collagen production, initiate regeneration, and restore damaged skin.

Another dynamic skincare duo is Kate’s EGF Serum and Retinol Evening Renewal Serum. We recommend using these products for your nighttime skin routine and applying EGF Serum first. EGF buffers the skin from some potential side effects of retinol - and increases the effectiveness of both anti-aging products.

When applied after a skincare procedure such as a laser treatment or chemical peel, EGF Serum promotes accelerated development of healthy cells and soothing of the skin. The same is true following microneedling, but EGF also maximizes the effects of this procedure, as discussed in this study on the National Institutes of Health website. The study concludes, “The application of topical growth factors after microneedling can be useful to reduce visual signs of facial photoaging by improving skin texture and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”

There are many ways to use EGF Serum and incorporate it into your skincare routine - and your current products work even better when accompanied with EGF.
